How to guide: Flash Dreambox (DM500) with DreamUp & Null Modem Cable (serial)

How to flash a new firmware image onto your Dreambox receiver using DreamUp with a null modem cable (serial). Guide covers the DM500 & DM800. Also works on there clones EagleBox, LinuxSat, V8 etc.

First get dreamupĀ HERE

Make sure to switch off and unplug your dreambox from the mains before connecting or disconnecting any cables, Null Modem, LNB, LAN, scart lead etc, otherwise this may cause internal damage to the box.

1. Unplug your dreambox from the mains.

2. Disconnect all cables except the Power Cable & a Null Modem Cable connected between your Eagle and PC com port.

3. On your PC install and start DreamUp

4. Select your correct PC Serial Port.

5. Untick “Use Network”

6. Click Connect.

7. When you see the on screen message “Connection Prepared, now switch on the dreambox!” now plug in your dreambox.

8. Click Flash and navigate to the image file on your PC.

9. After installation is complete, exit DreamUp.

10. Unplug your dreambox from the mains and wait at least 1 min.

11. Disconnect Null Modem Cable, Connect LNB, LAN & Scart Cable.

12. Plug in your dreambox and wait for it to boot into setup mode.

13. Perform Setup and scan satellites.

14. Save all new settings by rebooting the receiver. (Menu\Shutdown\Reboot Now)

It should work right away unless something went wrong.

How are you trying to access the Dreambox after the flash via the web interface, telnet, serial, ftp?

Also what image did you flash on it?

There pretty easy to recovery so dont worry too much :)

i flashed with dreamup and null modem cable with the gemini image 4.20 max var i then connected to the tv but it was not showing so i used the composite connection but no avail only green light stays on.

Is your Dreambox DM500S a clone? or other off brand like a EagleBox, LinuxSat, V8 etc.?
Do you by any chance know if that Gemini image was clone safe, most of them are not :(
We have guides to make them clone safe but its not really worth the hassle what we need to do now is recover your box into the factory state and then reflash with another image I think.

That works with no image or a broken/corrupt firmware image on the box. Its using the boot loaders recover mode to start up again. I hope that works, theres loads more recovery style guides here but that seems to have the highest success

The above linked image is clone safe and has some card emulators pre modded in, I would try to recover the box and then use that image or the 4.70 clone safe gemini firmware on the front page.

      EDIT :

Heres some info on why Gemini images are not clone safe or the best choice if you dont know :

I have flashed 3 out of 5 boxes but 2 of them just says Connection Prepared, now switch on the dreambox, once dreambox is switched on nothing happens, any ideas on a way around it, tried via network still the same
